For those of you who are interested in the Science outreach and advocacy work that I have been doing through my SCIRENS group, I wanted to point you to a few #longposts that I wrote on my Operation BABE tumblr in advance of forming the group. It will give you a better idea of the purpose behind it and the vector we are wanting this fledging idea to fly.

My fellow Scirens are Christina Ochoa, Tamara Krinsky and Rileah Vanderbilt — make sure that you follow them on twitter. We will be live tweeting the season finale of Cosmos so please join us. Scirens: ‘Sounding the call for Science!’ (I just made that up do you like?? ;))

Site Update Coming Soon!

In Latest | on May, 14, 2014 | by | 0 Comments

Hi there! I have been so neglectful of this site but that will be changing soon! I am excited to be doing an overhaul of the design — so it can be the ‘Command Station’ for all my digital portals and projects — especially with related to my work with my Actresses for STEM group SCIRENS. If you haven’t heard about us, please check out our Twitter and Tumblr pages as well as my blog post that launched the group. I’m still periodically blogging for Ms. in The Biz (who is about to celebrate their ONE YEAR birthday!) so head over there for some ‘Biz’ goodness and RSVP to their big party with Film Break.

Also, GRANITE FLATS Season 2 is currently airing! This season is fantastic, with guest stars Finola Hughes, Christopher Lloyd, Cary Elwes and Ivan Sergei. It is available on all the cable and satellite providers and streams online at HERE. Please check it out, I’m incredibly proud of the great family show that I am a part of.

Hope everyone is staying creative and passionate. (And a huge thanks to Ray Hill for getting my site back up and running!)

Be back soon — Taryn

Guest blog post on THE PLANETARY SOCIETY

My passion for science, and the personal growth that studying it has fostered, was forced out of my brain and onto the page in watching a mere 10 minute clip of the ‘Creation Debate’ between Bill Nye and Ken Hamm. The result was  ‘A Mission: Actresses for STEM post’, which lead ultimately to the formation of Scirens.  Thus, it was a serendipitous and exciting moment when Emily Lakdawalla from The Planetary Society, the nonprofit space exploration and education foundation founded by Carl Sagan and now run by Bill Nye, reached out to repost my ‘Why Cosmos should Matter… especially to Hollywood’ piece. I am so touched that the thoughts I explored were of interest to these amazing folks and their audience. Please check out their site and projects  — it’s not just education; they are creating and finding the funding for new space and research missions themselves. It is truly awe inspiring.

I was thrilled to see my “Why Cosmos should matter to Hollywood” Operation BABE blog post mentioned at length in an article by multi-hyphenate scientist/ science communicator / scifi science consultant Mika McKinnon. io9 is one of my favorite scifi and science comm sites so it was a huge moment to see my ideas discussed. Thanks Mika! (And make sure to check out all her other posts here)
